After the Storm: What to Do
Northeast Ohio storms can bring down trees in seconds. If you wake up to storm damage on your property, here is what to do — and what not to do.
Step 1: Stay Safe
Do not approach downed trees, especially if they are near power lines. Even if lines appear dead, they may still be energized. Keep family and pets away from the affected area.
If a tree has fallen on your home and you are inside, evacuate if safe to do so. If you cannot evacuate safely, move to a room away from the damage.
Step 2: Call the Right People First
- Injuries or trapped people: Call 911
- Downed power lines: Call your utility company (FirstEnergy: 888-544-4877)
- Gas smell: Call your gas company and evacuate
- Tree removal needed: Call All Trees Considered at (440) 901-0995
Step 3: Document Everything
Once it is safe, take photos and video of all damage. This documentation is critical for insurance claims. Photograph:
- The tree and where it fell
- Damage to structures, vehicles, or property
- The tree’s root plate if it uprooted
- Any pre-existing conditions visible
Step 4: Contact Your Insurance
Call your homeowner’s insurance company to file a claim. In most cases, trees that damage structures are covered for removal. Trees that fall in open areas may not be covered.
Step 5: Do NOT Attempt DIY Removal
Storm-damaged trees are under tremendous stress. Branches can be spring-loaded, trunks can split unpredictably, and root plates can shift. This work requires professional equipment and expertise.
