Burton sits at the eastern edge of Geauga County, roughly 10 miles east of our Chardon base along Route 87. The village centers around its historic town square, which hosts the famous Burton Pancake Breakfast and Apple Butter Festival each fall. Century Village, the Geauga County Historical Society’s living history museum on the east side of town, is surrounded by towering sugar maples and white oaks that frame the restored 19th century buildings. That same mix of old growth hardwoods defines much of Burton’s residential landscape, and keeping those trees healthy and safe is a year round job.

Sugar maple is king in Burton. The village and surrounding township sit squarely in Ohio’s maple syrup belt, and many properties have sugar bushes or remnant maple stands that have been tapped for generations. These trees need careful crown maintenance to stay productive and structurally sound. We do a lot of deadwood removal and crown cleaning on sugar maples here, clearing out crossed limbs and dead branches that reduce sap flow and invite decay fungi. When a maple finally reaches the end of its life, we handle the removal with rigging that protects the surrounding trees in the stand.

Burton’s elevation, around 1,300 feet, puts it in the heart of the Geauga County snowbelt. Lake Erie pushes moisture inland, and Burton regularly sees 80 to 100 inches of snow each winter. That heavy, wet snow loads up branches and splits codominant stems, especially on silver maples and Bradford pears that were popular landscape plantings in the 1980s and 1990s. Ice storms are the other concern. A quarter inch of ice on a red oak canopy adds thousands of pounds of weight, and the failures are sudden. We respond to storm damage calls in Burton year round, but winter keeps us especially busy here.

The soil around Burton is a heavy clay till left behind by glacial activity, with pockets of better drained loam near the East Branch of the Cuyahoga River that runs through the area. That clay soil holds water and creates shallow root systems, which means windthrow is a real issue during summer thunderstorms. We see a lot of uprooted trees on Burton properties after strong wind events, particularly white pines and spruces that act like sails in high wind. Stump grinding after those removals is straightforward when the root plate has already lifted, but we often need to do additional grading work to fill the crater left behind.

Beyond the village itself, Burton Township has large rural parcels with fence rows, woodlots, and overgrown field edges that need periodic clearing. Farmers and landowners call us to open up pasture, clear around outbuildings, or take down dead ash trees that line their driveways. Emerald ash borer swept through this area years ago, and there are still standing dead ash trees on nearly every rural property in Burton. Those snags get more brittle and dangerous every year. If you have dead ash on your property, do not wait for a storm to bring them down. Call us at (440) 901-0995 and Wes will come out to assess the situation and give you an honest quote.
