Bainbridge Township occupies the southwest corner of Geauga County, about 15 miles south of our Chardon base down Route 306. The township borders the Chagrin River valley on its western edge and stretches east toward Auburn Township, covering nearly 26 square miles of rolling terrain. Bainbridge is one of those Geauga County communities where the lots are big, the tree canopy is thick, and property owners treat their land more like small estates than suburban yards. That means the tree work here tends to be larger in scope and more detailed than what we see in denser communities.
The Chagrin River and its tributaries have carved deep ravines through the western portion of Bainbridge, and the slopes along those ravines are covered in mature beech, red oak, white oak, and shagbark hickory. Properties that back up to ravine land deal with erosion undermining root zones and trees leaning progressively toward structures as the slope moves. We get called to remove hazard trees along ravine edges regularly, and these are complex jobs. The lean is downhill, the footing is steep, and there are usually other trees in the fall zone that need to be protected. Wes rigs these removals from above, controlling every piece as it comes down. His lineman background means he is comfortable working on steep terrain where other climbers would rather bring in a crane, and on ravine properties a crane often cannot even access the site.
Bainbridge experienced a wave of upscale residential development in the 1990s and 2000s, particularly along Chillicothe Road, Snyder Road, and in the subdivisions east of Route 306. Many of those homes were built on previously wooded parcels where the builders selectively cleared for the house pad and driveway but left mature trees standing close to the structure for aesthetic value. Twenty years later, those retained trees have continued growing and are now too close for comfort. Root systems are lifting driveways and cracking foundations. Canopies overhang roofs and drop debris into gutters. Some trees that looked fine during construction have developed structural defects that were hidden by the surrounding forest and only became apparent as the trees matured in their new open growing conditions.
The dominant soil type across much of Bainbridge is Ellsworth silt loam over clay, which drains poorly and stays wet into late spring. That saturated soil creates conditions for Armillaria root rot, a fungal disease that kills trees from the roots up. We see Armillaria frequently on oaks and maples in Bainbridge. The first sign is usually mushroom clusters at the base of the trunk in fall, followed by crown dieback over the next year or two. By the time the crown is visibly thin, the root system is compromised and the tree is a windthrow risk. If you are seeing mushrooms growing at the base of a mature tree on your property, it is worth having it assessed before the next big storm.
