South Russell is a small village of about 3,800 residents tucked into the western edge of Geauga County, roughly 12 miles south of our Chardon base via Route 306. The village sits between Russell Township to the north and Bainbridge Township to the south, with Chagrin Falls just across the county line to the west. South Russell is one of the most heavily wooded residential communities in the area, and its residents are deliberate about preserving that character. The mature tree canopy is not an accident here; it is a core part of what makes the village what it is.

The dominant species in South Russell are the hardwoods that define the Western Reserve forests of northeastern Ohio: red oak, white oak, American beech, sugar maple, and shagbark hickory. Many of these trees predate the homes beneath them by decades. You will find two and three foot diameter oaks on properties throughout the village, particularly along Bell Road, Chillicothe Road, and in the neighborhoods near South Russell Village Park. Trees of that age and size are valuable, both aesthetically and financially, and they deserve careful management rather than neglect until they become dangerous. We do a lot of preventive crown cleaning and structural pruning in South Russell, removing deadwood, reducing end weight on long laterals, and addressing weak branch attachments before they become failure points.

The West Branch of the Chagrin River flows through the western portion of South Russell, and the tributary valleys that feed it create the hilly, ravine cut terrain that characterizes the village. Properties along the river corridor and its feeder streams have steep slopes covered in hemlock, beech, and tulip poplar. Hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive insect, has been moving through northeastern Ohio and is starting to show up on hemlocks in the Chagrin River watershed. Infested hemlocks lose their needles progressively, weaken over several years, and eventually die. If you have hemlocks on your South Russell property, keep an eye on the undersides of the branches for small white cotton like masses at the base of the needles. We can remove hemlocks that are too far gone and advise on treatment options for trees that might still be saved.

South Russell properties tend to be one to three acres with long setbacks from the road, and many homes are surrounded by trees on all sides. That means tree work here requires careful planning. Felling a tree in any direction usually puts something at risk, whether it is the house, a detached garage, a fence, or a specimen tree that the homeowner wants to keep. Wes approaches these jobs methodically, climbing the tree and disassembling it from the top down, roping each section and lowering it to the ground in a controlled path. It takes longer than dropping a tree in an open field, but it is the only responsible way to work in a community like South Russell where every tree on the lot matters to the homeowner.

The village’s position at the northern edge of the Chagrin River valley means it catches weather from multiple directions. Summer thunderstorms roll in from the southwest, winter ice storms push in from the northwest, and the occasional lake effect band dips south enough to dump heavy snow on the village. Each type of weather event damages trees differently: wind snaps branches and topples shallow rooted trees, ice pulls apart branch unions and bends leaders, and wet snow loads up evergreen canopies until they split. We provide 24/7 emergency response for storm damage in South Russell. Call (440) 901-0995 any time, day or night, and Wes will prioritize based on the severity of the situation.
