Concord Township sits right between Chardon and the Lake Erie shoreline, making it one of the most convenient communities in our service area. We are about 12 minutes down Auburn Road or Route 44, and we work in Concord regularly enough that we often have jobs scheduled there on back to back days. The township covers a large area of central Lake County, running from the Kirtland border on the west to LeRoy Township on the east, and the landscape transitions from rolling wooded hills in the south to the flatter, more developed areas near Painesville in the north.

Concord Township has experienced significant residential growth over the past two decades, and that growth creates a specific kind of tree work that we handle constantly. New subdivisions went in on land that was previously wooded or agricultural, and the builders left clusters of trees standing between homes and along lot lines. Those retained trees were forest grown, meaning they developed tall, narrow crowns while competing for light. Once the surrounding forest was removed, they became exposed to wind loads they were never built to handle. We see a lot of storm failures on these exposed trees, especially tulip poplars and red oaks that grew in the interior of a stand and now stand alone on the edge of someone’s yard. The older parts of Concord, particularly along Ravenna Road, Girdled Road, and the neighborhoods around the township park, have a different set of tree issues. These properties were settled decades earlier, and the landscape trees planted in the 1950s and 1960s are fully mature. Norway spruces that were 3 foot Christmas trees when they went in the ground are now 60 feet tall with trunks two feet across. Blue spruces are losing their lower branches to cytospora canker and looking ragged. Austrian pines are dying from diplodia tip blight. These older evergreen plantings are reaching the end of their functional lifespan across Concord, and we remove dozens of them every season.

Concord’s position in the transition zone between the Lake Erie snowbelt and the milder lakeshore climate means the township catches the worst of both worlds. Lake effect snow bands settle over Concord in winter, dumping heavy wet snow that clings to branches and loads up canopies. The township also gets significant ice events when warm air off the lake overrides cold surface air. After a major ice storm, we can get a dozen calls from Concord in a single morning. Concord’s soils are a mix of Mahoning silt loam and heavy Geauga County clay till, which creates drainage challenges on many properties. Trees growing in compacted clay develop shallow, plate like root systems that make them vulnerable to windthrow.
