Mentor is Lake County’s largest city with over 47,000 residents, and it is about a 20 minute drive northwest from our Chardon base down Route 44 and Route 20. The city stretches from the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve along the Lake Erie shore down through miles of established residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and the suburban developments south of Route 2. All that developed land is filled with trees, and Mentor keeps us busier than almost any other city in our service area.

The neighborhoods built during Mentor’s big growth period in the 1960s through 1980s, areas around Bellflower Road, Hopkins Road, and the Mentor Avenue corridor, are where we do the most work. The builders planted red maples, pin oaks, Norway maples, and silver maples as street and yard trees, and those are all 40 to 60 years old now. Silver maples in particular have become a problem species in Mentor. They grow fast, develop weak branch unions, and drop massive limbs without warning. We remove more silver maples in Mentor than any other species. Mentor’s proximity to Lake Erie creates weather patterns that stress trees in ways that inland communities do not experience. Northerly winds off the lake drive moisture and ice into the canopy, and the city catches the front edge of lake effect events before they intensify further inland. The freeze thaw cycles along the lakeshore are more extreme than in Geauga County, which means more frost cracking on thin barked species like red maple and cherry. We also see a lot of wind lean on trees in the northern neighborhoods near Mentor Lagoons and Headlands Beach State Park, where there is less wind break from surrounding development.

The Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve, one of the largest natural marshes remaining along the Lake Erie coast, borders the city’s northwest side. Properties backing up to the marsh and along the lower portions of Mentor Creek and Marsh Creek deal with saturated soils and high water tables that keep root systems shallow. Trees in those areas, especially willows, cottonwoods, and swamp white oaks, tend to blow over in storms or develop root rot from standing water. South Mentor, below Route 2, has a different character. The neighborhoods there are newer, lots tend to be smaller, and the tree work is usually about managing growth rather than dealing with decline.
