Hambden Township stretches across the northern tier of Geauga County, bordered by Lake County to the north and Thompson Township to the east. The terrain here transitions from the relatively flat farmland around Chardon into a more dissected landscape carved by Mill Creek and its feeder streams. Those ravines are choked with mature timber, including towering tulip poplars, red oaks, and beech trees that can reach 80 to 100 feet in height. When one of those big trees dies or takes storm damage, it becomes a removal job that requires real climbing skill and careful rigging to bring down in pieces without tearing up the surrounding canopy or sliding downhill.

This part of Geauga County sits squarely in the Lake Erie snowbelt. Hambden averages well over 100 inches of snow in a typical winter, and the lake effect moisture also delivers punishing ice storms that coat branches in half an inch or more of ice. Those ice events are what drive a huge portion of our emergency work in Hambden. Hardwoods with included bark unions, codominant stems, or old pruning wounds are the first to split under the load. Norway maples, a species planted widely across northeast Ohio decades ago, are particularly prone to ice failure because of their weak branch structure. After a major ice event, Wes is often in Hambden within hours clearing trees off driveways and rooflines.

The residential character of Hambden runs toward larger wooded lots, many of them five acres or more, set back from township roads via long gravel drives. Those driveways tunnel through the canopy, and the trees on either side are constantly reaching toward the light gap the driveway creates. Without periodic trimming, the canopy closes in, branches hang lower each year, and eventually a dead limb drops on a vehicle or blocks access entirely. Driveway clearance trimming is one of our most requested services in Hambden. Wes trims for vertical and horizontal clearance and removes any leaners or dead standing trees that threaten the drive.

The soils in Hambden are predominantly Pierpont and Platea silt loams, heavy clay based glacial soils that drain poorly and stay wet well into spring. Trees growing in these saturated soils develop shallower root plates than the same species would on better drained ground, which makes them more susceptible to windthrow. After a wet spring followed by a strong summer thunderstorm, it is common to see entire trees tipped over with the root ball pulled out of the ground like a plug. These windthrown trees are straightforward removals in open ground but become more complex when they fall across fences, lean against standing trees, or come to rest on structures.

Hambden is only about 10 minutes from our Chardon base, which makes it one of our fastest response areas. Whether you need a dead tree taken down before winter, storm cleanup after the next lake effect event, or a woodlot thinned to let your best trees thrive, Wes will come out, look at the situation, and give you an honest assessment. Call (440) 901-0995 to get on the schedule.
