Huntsburg Township sits in the eastern stretch of Geauga County where State Route 322 cuts through rolling farmland and thick second-growth forest. The township center clusters around the intersection of Routes 322 and 528, but most of the land is rural acreage, five to twenty acre parcels where red oak, sugar maple, shagbark hickory, and white ash form dense woodlots between open fields. Driving out from our Chardon base takes about 20 minutes east on 322, so we know this corridor well and can get a crew there quickly when storms roll through.

The emerald ash borer hit Huntsburg’s ash population hard starting around 2012, and the damage is still unfolding. Dead ash trees stand throughout the township, many of them along property lines and field edges where they were left as shade trees decades ago. The problem with dead ash is that the wood turns brittle within two to three years of the tree dying. Branches snap without warning, and the trunk can fracture unpredictably during removal. Wes has taken down hundreds of dead ash trees across Geauga County and knows how to read the wood, test for structural integrity before climbing, and use rigging to control every piece on the way down.

Huntsburg’s soil is predominantly Mahoning silt loam and Ravenna silt loam, both of which hold moisture and create shallow root plates in larger hardwoods. That matters because wind events, especially the straight-line winds that blow across the open agricultural land here, can topple apparently healthy trees that have poor root anchorage in saturated ground. After heavy spring rains, we see a spike in blowdown calls from Huntsburg and the surrounding townships. Properties along the Grand River tributary corridors in the southern part of the township are particularly vulnerable, where the water table stays high well into June.

Lot clearing is another common request out here. New construction on rural parcels often means selectively removing trees to open a building envelope while preserving the best specimens for shade and property value. Wes walks the site with the property owner, marks the trees to keep, and plans the removal sequence so felling trees drop into open areas rather than into the keepers. We also handle fence row clearing for agricultural properties, taking out the volunteer box elders, wild cherry, and dead elms that crowd fence lines and make maintenance impossible.

Winter work in Huntsburg keeps us busy too. Geauga County sits squarely in the Lake Erie snow belt, and Huntsburg catches the tail end of those lake-effect bands. Heavy wet snow loads in November and December snap limbs on mature hardwoods, and ice storms can bring down entire crowns. We respond to emergency calls around the clock and can typically reach Huntsburg within 30 minutes of a call. If you have storm-damaged trees or dead standing timber that needs to come down before next winter, call Wes at (440) 901-0995 for a walkthrough and honest quote.

“We really can’t say enough about Wes and his team!! From the moment of reaching out to Wes he responded quickly and patiently answered every question we had! If we could give more stars, we definitely would! You will not be disappointed with his services in the least bit. In a day and age when it’s hard to find people that are willing to follow through and communicate to you, Wes has not adopted that trend. He’s a great communicator and will get the job done. Thanks again Wes, William and Charlie!! Oh and we almost forgot to mention the cleanup! Superb!! They are very thorough and don’t leave anything behind. We really couldn’t be happier!!”
