Troy Township is tucked into the southeast quadrant of Geauga County, south of Burton and west of Middlefield, in a part of the county that still feels genuinely rural. The township never developed a village center the way Burton or Middlefield did, so there is no downtown, no commercial strip, just a grid of township roads connecting farms, wooded acreage, and scattered residential properties. That dispersed, agricultural character means the tree work here tends to be bigger in scope: clearing overgrown fence rows across hundreds of feet, removing clusters of dead timber from woodlots, and taking down individual large trees that have grown too close to barns and grain bins over the decades.

The terrain in Troy is gently rolling, typical of the Allegheny Plateau in Geauga County, with some steeper ground along the creek drainages that cut east toward the Grand River watershed. The upland soils are heavy clays, mostly Mahoning and Ellsworth series, and they support dense hardwood growth. Red oak and white oak are the dominant timber species, with sugar maple, black cherry, and white ash filling in the canopy gaps. The ash component is largely dead standing timber now, killed by emerald ash borer over the past decade. In Troy, where properties are large and many owners have let the dead ash stand rather than pay for removal, we frequently encounter ash trees that have been dead three or four years. At that stage the wood is punky and unpredictable. Limbs snap off during felling, trunks shatter instead of hinging cleanly, and the whole tree can come apart in ways you do not expect. Wes treats every dead ash as a high risk removal and rigs accordingly.

A lot of Troy Township properties have legacy agricultural structures, old dairy barns, equipment sheds, and outbuildings that were built 50 to 80 years ago when the surrounding trees were much smaller. Now a silver maple that was a sapling when the barn went up is a 70 foot tree with branches overhanging the roof and roots pushing into the foundation. Removing a tree that tight to a structure takes directional felling or piece by piece rigging from the canopy down, depending on the lean and the room available. Wes’s background as a master climber means he can work in the tree, set rigging, and lower sections where they need to go without putting the building at risk.

Troy also borders the Burton Wetlands area to the north, and the southern edge of that wetland complex extends into Troy Township. Properties near this transition zone deal with seasonally high water tables that keep soils saturated from snowmelt through early summer. Trees in these wet marginal zones, particularly soft maples and swamp white oaks, develop extensive surface root systems that can heave sidewalks, crack foundations, and make mowing a nightmare. Removal of these water tolerant species often involves dealing with soft ground conditions that limit equipment access, requiring more hand work and creative rigging solutions.

Troy Township is about a 20 minute drive from our base in Chardon via Route 44 through Burton. We schedule jobs here regularly and are familiar with the area’s roads and property types. “We had some recent storm damage from the several tornadoes that passed through the area. Wes and his team were very prompt to remove the dangerous trees that were a combination of large fallen hickories and large hanging limbs (limbs big enough to be considered trees themselves) that destroyed our split rail fence. His crew were friendly and courteous during the work and left the yard spotless. Thanks for your help.”

“We’ve used Wes for several jobs. Can’t say enough about his response time and quality work. Will definitely use All Trees Considered for any future projects! This is just a recent tree removal West did after our wind storm damage. He in his crew showed up at 8:30 at night and handled the situation because the tree was hanging across the sidewalk. Thanks again Wes for the prompt service. Great job once again.”
