Newbury Township occupies a stretch of south central Geauga County where the Upper Chagrin River and its tributaries have carved a landscape of wooded ravines, gentle ridges, and bottomland flats. The terrain gives Newbury a wilder feel than many of the surrounding communities. Properties along Pekin Road, Woodin Road, and the corridors near Punderson State Park back up to deep woods that have been growing largely unmanaged for decades. Sugar maples, white oaks, and American beeches form the dominant canopy on the uplands, while the wet bottomlands fill up with green ash (mostly dead now from emerald ash borer), red maples, and dense stands of ironwood and musclewood in the understory.

Punderson State Park is the geographic anchor of Newbury Township, and the glacial kettle lake at its center is one of the natural landmarks of Geauga County. The park’s heavily forested perimeter means that residential properties bordering state land often inherit tree problems from both sides of the boundary. Deadfall from park trees can block driveways, and mature trees on private land that lean toward homes may have root systems tangled with forest understory that complicates removal. Wes works these edge of the woods properties frequently, removing hazard trees while respecting the natural buffer that makes the location desirable in the first place.

The soil conditions in Newbury vary significantly across the township. The upland areas have reasonably well drained Ellsworth and Mahoning silt loams that support healthy hardwood growth, but the low areas around the river and the numerous small wetlands sit on heavy, poorly drained glacial clay. Trees in those wet pockets deal with periodic flooding that weakens root systems over time. Black cherries and pin oaks planted on these marginal sites often develop decline symptoms in their 30s and 40s, losing canopy from the top down. By the time a homeowner calls about one, the tree is usually too far gone to save and needs to come down before it drops a leader onto the house.

Newbury is also home to a number of horse properties and hobby farms along its eastern and southern roads. These properties typically have pasture bordered by mature tree rows that serve double duty as windbreaks and property boundaries. Maintaining those tree rows means periodic removal of dead and dying specimens, crown lifting to keep branches above fence height, and sometimes replanting gaps where trees have been lost. Wes understands how these working landscapes function and plans removals around livestock schedules and fencing.

From our base in Chardon, most Newbury addresses are about a 15 to 20 minute drive south on Route 44 or through Burton. We work in Newbury regularly throughout the year, from winter removals when the frozen ground gives us better equipment access, to summer storm cleanup after the convective storms that roll through the Chagrin valley. Call (440) 901-0995 for an estimate. Wes comes out personally, walks the property, and talks through what he recommends and why.

“This is the third time we've used ATC, and, as usual, they did an incredible job. They removed a number of dead trees and branches from the back of our property, and did some canopy trimming in the poplar trees near our house. It was a large job, and Wes and crew worked quickly, efficiently, and, most importantly, safely. We will use them again for any job we might have in the future. Highly recommended!”
