Madison is the easternmost community we serve in Lake County, and its geography sets it apart from the rest of our service area. The township stretches from the Lake Erie shoreline south through the old village center along Route 20 and into the agricultural flatlands and nursery country that Madison has been known for going back over a century. The Madison and Perry nursery district is one of the oldest commercial nursery regions in Ohio, and that horticultural history means many residential properties have specimen trees, ornamental plantings, and mature shade trees that were planted with real intention rather than randomly.

Lakefront properties in Madison face conditions that accelerate tree decline. The bluffs along the lake are actively eroding in many sections, and trees growing near the bluff edge lose root anchoring as the soil retreats. Salt spray carried inland during storms coats foliage and bark, causing tip burn on evergreens and creating entry points for disease on hardwoods. We have removed large cottonwoods and willows from bluff properties in Madison where the trees were visibly leaning lakeward as the ground beneath them gave way. These are technical removals that require careful rigging to control the fall direction, because letting them go toward the bluff risks taking more of the bank with them.

Inland Madison, particularly the neighborhoods south of the village center and along Middle Ridge Road, has a classic northeast Ohio tree canopy dominated by sugar maple, red oak, and white ash. The ash component is largely dead or dying from emerald ash borer, and many properties still have standing dead ash that owners have been putting off dealing with. Every year those dead trees stand, they become more dangerous and more difficult to remove because the wood gets brittle and unpredictable. If you have dead ash on your Madison property, the best time to take them down was last year. The second best time is now.

Madison also sits in one of the heavier lake effect snow zones in Lake County. While Chardon and the Geauga County interior get the heaviest accumulation, Madison catches enough wet, heavy snow to cause significant branch loading on deciduous trees in early and late winter before leaves drop or after they emerge. Bradford pears, which were planted extensively in Madison subdivisions from the 1990s through the 2000s, are especially notorious for splitting under snow and ice load because of their tight branch angles. We remove and clean up more failed Bradford pears every spring than most people would believe.

The drive from Chardon to Madison takes about 30 minutes heading northeast through Thompson and Perry. It is the farthest edge of our regular service area, but we are out there consistently. Wes provides free on-site estimates and will give you a straight answer about what needs to come down, what can be saved with proper pruning, and what the job will cost.

“Excellent tree removal service. We had four trees removed, two of which were growing over the house. One of those threaded the needle, being safely dropped between a patio and a very nice Eastern Hemlock. Very precise. Communication was great, they get the job done without a lot of equipment, and work very efficiently. Picture attached is before removal, did not get a snap of Wes's acrobatics. Maybe next time.”
