Wickliffe is a first ring suburb on the western edge of Lake County, bordered by Willoughby to the east, Eastlake to the north, and the Cuyahoga County line to the west. It is about 4.5 square miles of dense residential neighborhoods built primarily in the 1950s and 1960s, when the postwar housing boom pushed east from Cleveland along the Euclid Avenue and Lakeland Boulevard corridors. The dominant species in Wickliffe’s neighborhoods are silver maple, pin oak, and Norway maple, with scattered red maples and white oaks mixed in. Silver maples are the biggest concern. They grow fast and large, which made them popular with developers who wanted instant shade, but their wood is weak and their branching structure creates included bark unions that split under load. In Wickliffe, where lot widths average 60 to 75 feet and houses sit 15 feet from the property line, a splitting silver maple does not just fall into an open yard. It hits a roof, a fence, a car, or a neighbor’s garage. Pin oaks are the other common problem species in Wickliffe, not because they fail structurally, but because of iron chlorosis. The heavy clay soils throughout western Lake County have a high pH that locks up iron, and pin oaks are especially sensitive to that deficiency. You can spot it easily: the leaves turn yellow with green veins, starting at the top of the canopy and working down over the years. Once a pin oak reaches advanced chlorosis, it begins dying back from the crown, dropping dead branches into the yard and onto the roof. At that point, removal is usually the right call. Wickliffe’s compact lot sizes also mean that stump grinding is a regular need.
