Willoughby Hills occupies a unique position in western Lake County, sitting between the suburban density of Willoughby to the north and the wooded rural character of Kirtland to the south. The Chagrin River runs through the heart of the city, carving a wide, forested valley that gives the community its name and its character. Properties along Bishop Road, SOM Center Road, and the neighborhoods off Chardon Road back up to wooded ravines and river bluffs, creating some of the most scenic, and most tree-intensive, residential settings in Lake County. From our Chardon base, we reach Willoughby Hills in about 20 minutes heading west on Route 6.

The Chagrin River corridor is the defining feature for tree work in Willoughby Hills. The river has carved 50 to 80 foot deep ravines through shale and sandstone bedrock, and the slopes are covered in mature sycamore, cottonwood, red oak, and beech. These riparian trees grow tall reaching for light above the canopy, and when they fail, the results are dramatic: a 90-foot sycamore toppling from a ravine edge can reach a house that the homeowner thought was a safe distance from the tree line. We assess hazard trees along ravine edges throughout Willoughby Hills, looking at lean, root exposure from erosion, and crown condition to determine which trees need to come down now versus which ones can be monitored.

The neighborhoods built in the 1960s and 1970s, including the developments off Chardon Road and the areas near Lost Nation Golf Course, have their own set of challenges. Pin oaks were a popular landscape tree in that era, and Willoughby Hills is full of them. Pin oaks are decent street trees when young, but they retain their lower dead branches rather than self-pruning like other oaks, and they develop iron chlorosis in the alkaline clay soils common throughout Lake County. The chlorosis shows up as yellowing leaves and reduced growth, and over decades it weakens the tree to the point where removal makes more sense than continued treatment. We remove a lot of declining pin oaks in Willoughby Hills and can recommend better-adapted replacement species.

The mix of lot sizes in Willoughby Hills means we adapt our approach to each property. Some neighborhoods have standard quarter-acre suburban lots where every removal is a tight-access rigging job. Other properties, especially those along the river or in the southern part of the city, sit on one to five acres with room to work. Wes evaluates the site, determines the best approach, and handles the climbing and cutting personally. For the tighter suburban lots, that typically means climbing and sectional dismantling with ropes. For the larger properties with open drop zones, we can fell trees directionally and process them on the ground, which is faster and more cost-effective.

Willoughby Hills also sees significant storm damage from both summer convective storms that follow the Chagrin River valley and winter lake-effect events that dump heavy snow across the elevated terrain north of the river. The combination of tall riparian trees and storm exposure means we respond to emergency calls here regularly. Trees on homes, across driveways, and leaning into power lines are all situations Wes handles routinely. Call (440) 901-0995 for emergency service any time, day or night, or to schedule an estimate for planned tree work.
